BHP has conducted studies focused on cancer in Botswana since around 2010. The ongoing large "Thabatse" cancer observational cohort enrols all consenting persons who receive treatment for cancer at the main private and public centers across the country, to understand the type, stage, treatment, and outcomes of cancer in Botswana. Thabatse findings showing late stage at time of cancer diagnosis and related poor clinical outcomes (including of cervical and breast cancers) motivated the ongoing community-randomized "Potlako" trial that is evaluating a package of community- and clinic-based, client-centered interventions to diagnose and treat common cancers earlier. Several other studies focused on enhancing cancer diagnosis and care are underway.
