Name of the study: The diagnosis and treatment of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in pregnant women to prevent adverse neonatal consequences (Maduo Study). 

Study Status: Recruiting 

Study Objectives 

1. To determine the burden of CT/NG infections and correlates of infection among asymptomatic pregnant women in Gaborone, Botswana.
2. To compare longitudinal neonatal outcomes for pregnant women tested & treated for CT/NG infections during antenatal care with women who received standard antenatal care.
3. To assess the burden of infection and markers of inflammatory response to CT/NG infection during pregnancy and associations with vertical transmission of CT/NG.

Study Design: Cohort study 

Study Population: Pregnant women (aged >=15 years) attending their first antenatal care visit at 27 weeks’ gestation or less who have not been treated for an STI within the last 30 days. 

Study Size: 500 participants (250 in the testing group and 250 in the standard of care group).

Study Duration: 2 years
